What you gotta know - dog friendly baking

There are certain ingredients that dogs should not eat, and one should never assume that a dog can eat anything a human can. On top of that, your dog may have their own unique food allergies and sensitivities, so these are good to keep in mind before feeding your doggo anything new!

Luckily, the great thing about baking your dog their own cake is that you have full control over what you add and leave out – so you can avoid those pesky preservatives and additives!

WAG’s dog cake recipe

Let’s get baking! Here’s a simple, doggo-approved recipe that uses dog-safe ingredients:

Dog friendly ingredients:

  • 1 apple, peeled, cored, and finely chopped
  • ½ grated carrot
  • 2 teaspoons of honey for sweetness
  • 3 tablespoons of coconut oil
  • 225 grams of wholegrain flour (substitute with chickpea flour for gluten-free)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder (make sure it's aluminum-free)
  • 2 eggs
  • 100 grams of plain Greek yoghurt
  • Water (as needed)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the apple, carrot, honey, and coconut oil.
  3. Add the flour and baking powder, mixing the dry ingredients until just combined.
  4. Whisk the eggs in a separate bowl and fold them into the mixture with the Greek yoghurt, adding a splash of water if the mix is too thick.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased cake tin.
  6. Bake for 25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean.
  7. Let the cake cool completely before the next step - decorating!

Decorating time! featuring WAG’s Yoghurt Drops

Now for the fun part - decorating with WAG’s yoghurt drops! These drops not only add a burst of flavour but also a pop of colour, making the cake irresistible to your pooch.

  • Creating patterns: Use the different flavours to create colourful patterns on top of the cake. For instance, alternating carob and vanilla can give a great contrast.
  • Make a Yoghurt Drop rainbow: Create a rainbow using Strawberry, Apricot and Vanilla drops.
  • Writing messages: Soften a few yoghurt drops in a warm spoon and use them to write a message or your dog’s name on the cake.
  • Yoghurt Drop Shapes: Melt down our Yoghurt Drops and place into a chocolate mould and pop in the fridge to harden. You can create any shapes you like using this method!
  • Border decoration: Line the edge of the cake with alternating drops of strawberry and banana for a bright, fun look! Or why not line up some Forage Fish around the edge?

Jerky sprinkles: Grab some of our Beef Jerky or Venison Jerky, and lightly crush up using a rolling pin. Sprinkle on top for some crunchy, meaty goodness!

Other dog friendly decorating ideas include using fresh fruits and veggies (hold the grapes though please!*) such as sliced strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, sliced banana, grated carrot, or sliced cucumber.

    Icing your cake

Our Yoghurt Drops melt down beautifully to create a delicious icing for your cake, so go wild! You can also spread on some peanut butter (xylitol-free) or greek yoghurt as a delicious ‘icing’! Our top tip: melt down your peanut butter slightly for a soft, spreadable consistency.

*Please note that grapes, raisins and sultanas are poisonous to dogs.

What health benefits do your yoghurt drops have?

Doggos go crazy for WAG Yoghurt Drops, think of them as the cheat treat of the dog treat world! Packed with tummy loving probiotics, these drops are gentle on the gut. However, remember to offer these sweet treats to your doggo in moderation! (AKA, maybe hold off on letting your dog devour the entire cake if you’ve gone a little heavy on the Yoghurt Drops!)

    Sharing is caring!

    • Mini cake versions: If you have more than one dog or want to treat a furry friend, consider making mini cakes using muffin tins. Lightly grease tins with some coconut oil if you don’t want to use paper cases, or remove the paper wrapping before serving.
    • Cake decorating party: Invite over some doggie friends and their owners for a cake decorating party. It’s a great way for pets (and their parents) to socialise.
