What’s fuelling your fur baby? The essential nutrients for dogs you need to know

We know you want the absolute best for your dog — after all, they’re not just a pet, they’re family. But when thinking about canine nutrition, it can feel like you’re wading through a sea of conflicting advice and endless ingredient lists. So, what do dogs actually need to thrive?

Let’s break it down, so you can feel confident you’re giving your furry mate everything they need to live their happiest, healthiest life.

Why nutrition matters for your furry best mate

We know your dog is your adventure buddy, couch snuggler, and all-round best mate. Just like us, what they eat has a huge impact on their overall health and happiness. Good nutrition is the foundation to a shiny coat, strong teeth, waggy energy levels, and a long, tail-wagging life.

It’s not about fancy fad diets or the latest buzzwords — it’s about real, wholesome food that supports their unique needs. When you nail your dog’s nutrition, you’re not just filling their bowl, you’re giving them what they need to chase balls, explore the great outdoors, and shower you with love for years to come.

Dogs aren’t tiny humans

First things first: dogs aren’t just small, furry versions of us. So no, unfortunately, your dinner leftovers aren't gonna cut it.

Dogs have unique dietary needs that are totally different from ours. For example, while we can enjoy snacking on chocolate and grapes (maybe a bit too often), these foods can be toxic to dogs.

In fact, there’s a long list of human foods that are a no-go for your pup — including onions, garlic, avocados, alcohol, and macadamia nuts (more on these later). When in doubt, it’s always best to check first, and consult your vet for tailored advice.

In general, dogs need a diet made up of primarily protein from meat, with moderate amounts of healthy fats and some carbohydrates from natural sources to support energy, muscle maintenance and overall wellbeing.

The big players: essential nutrients for dogs

Just like us, dogs need a balance of essential nutrients to keep them running (and zooming).

Here’s a quick rundown:

Protein

Protein is the MVP of a dog’s diet. It helps build strong muscles, supports a healthy immune system, and provides essential amino acids that can’t be made by the body.

High-quality meat sources (like lean beef, chicken, kangaroo and fish) are top protein sources you should consider including in your dog’s diet if you haven't already.

Fats

Fats are a super important source of energy. They help keep your dog’s coat glossy and skin healthy, and support brain function.

Like humans, avoid too many saturated fats as they can lead to weight gain and put unnecessary strain on your dog’s heart and joints. Instead, focus on healthy fats (like omega-3s, found in our Forage Fish) that support their skin, coat and brain health.

Carbohydrates

Dogs can handle carbs, but they don’t need them as much as humans do. However, carbohydrates can provide energy and fibre for gut health when sourced naturally (think sweet potato).

Some grains can be safe and even beneficial for dogs in moderation. Oats, brown rice, barley and quinoa are generally well-tolerated and can provide fibre, vitamins and minerals.

However, just like us, some dogs can be intolerant or sensitive to grains. This can show up as itchy skin, ear infections, or tummy troubles. If you notice these signs, it might be worth chatting with your vet about a grain-free or limited-ingredient diet to keep your furry mate feeling their best.

Keep in mind that every dog is different, so always introduce new foods slowly and consult your vet if you're unsure.

Vitamins and minerals

Vitamins and minerals are the little powerhouses that work behind the scenes to keep your doggo thriving. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Vitamin A supports healthy vision, immune function and growth. Found in carrots, pumpkin and leafy greens (and our Beef Jerky).

  • Vitamin B12 supports healthy nerve function, red blood cell formation and energy production. Our Kangaroo Jerky and Kangaroo Teeth Cleanser Bone are great sources of Vitamin B12.

  • Vitamin C acts as an antioxidant, helping fight free radicals and supporting the immune system. Blueberries and leafy greens are great sources.

  • Vitamin D helps regulate calcium and phosphorus for strong bones and teeth. Found in fish and certain meats.

  • Vitamin E supports skin and coat health, as well as immune function. Found in leafy greens and some meats.

  • Vitamin K plays a key role in blood clotting and bone health. Found in leafy greens and certain meats, in fact, our Chicken Breast is a great source.

  • Calcium is vital for strong bones and teeth. Often sourced from dairy, fish and some leafy greens.

  • Phosphorus works with calcium to maintain healthy bones and cells. Found in meats and fish (and our crunchy Deer Antlers!)

  • Zinc helps with skin health, wound healing and immune support. Found in meats (particularly beef), fish and eggs.

Water

Never underestimate the power of H2O. Dogs need constant access to fresh, clean water to stay hydrated, support digestion and dental health, and regulate body temperature. Simple but essential.

The importance of natural, single-ingredient treats

At WAG, we believe the best nutrients come straight from nature. That’s why we’re big on single-ingredient, grain-free, air-dried treats. These treats should always be an addition to a balanced, complete diet — think of them as the cherry on top of your dog’s healthy meals.

By sticking to natural ingredients, you avoid dodgy additives and fillers that can wreak havoc on your dog’s health. Your pup deserves treats that are just as nutritious as they are delicious — and that’s exactly what we’re here for.

Harmful foods to keep off the menu

As much as they might beg with those big, puppy eyes, some human foods are a hard no for dogs. Here are a few to keep far, far away from your furry friend’s bowl:

  • Chocolate

  • Grapes and sultanas

  • Onions and garlic

  • Avocado

  • Macadamia nuts

  • Alcohol

If your dog accidentally gets into something they shouldn’t, contact your vet straight away. It’s always better to play it safe.

When in doubt, ask your vet

Remember, every dog is different, from the zoomy puppies to the wise old floofs. While this guide covers the basics of essential nutrients for dogs, it doesn’t replace personalised advice from your vet.

If you’re ever unsure about your dog’s diet, have a chat with your local vet to make sure you’re on the right track.

Better nutrition, better zoomies, better life

Feeding your dog doesn’t have to be confusing or stressful. By understanding essential nutrients for dogs, choosing natural, high-quality treats, and working with your vet, you can help your furry friend live a long, happy and healthy life.

Looking to spoil your pup with something extra special (and sneak in some calcium and probiotics while you’re at it)? Check out our limited-edition Yoghurt Drops — but hurry, they’re only around from April to September! Fetch yours now.
